Understanding Fiber Network Outages and Restoration Efforts

Like all critical infrastructure, fiber-optic networks can occasionally experience service outages. These disruptions may be caused by severe weather, wildlife activity, construction incidents, or vehicle accidents that damage underground or aerial fiber lines. When damage occurs, restoration efforts begin as quickly and safely as possible; however, repairs can take time depending on the severity and location of the damage.

Why Fiber Repairs Take Time

Restoring fiber service requires a highly precise process known as fiber splicing. This involves joining the ends of damaged optical fibers to recreate a continuous, low-loss path for data transmission. Each splice requires careful preparation, cleaning, and fusion by trained technicians.

For an experienced technician, splicing a single fiber typically takes 10–15 minutes. Because fiber cables contain many individual strands, the total repair time increases with the fiber count. For example:

  • A 96-strand fiber cable may take approximately 2.5 to 4 hours to fully splice and restore.
  • A 288-strand fiber cable can take 5 to 10 hours or more, depending on the extent of the damage.

While the cable itself may appear small, it often contains over 100 individual glass fibers, each carrying data. If a cable is cut or damaged, every affected fiber must be individually prepared and spliced to restore full service.

The repair process includes:

  • Stripping the protective coating from the fiber
  • Precisely cleaving the fiber ends
  • Cleaning the exposed glass
  • Fusion-splicing the fibers together
  • Protecting the splice with a reinforced sleeve

This level of precision ensures the network maintains the high performance and reliability customers expect.

Our Commitment to Restoration

Our network operations and field crews are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to fiber outages and infrastructure damage. When outages occur, our teams work as quickly and safely as possible to locate the damage, complete the necessary repairs, and restore service.

We sincerely appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding during these events as our crews work to return service to the community.
